Negative Effects of Social Media

Negative Effects of Social Media

Libby Isenberg, Contributing Reporter

Social media has made quite an impact on today’s society, but most people don’t realize the damage it has done. Social media has made it easier to say negative comments that people are too scared to say out loud, and it has set new expectations on appearances.

Before social media was created, bullying used to be a kid that picked on you in person and would hurt you with physical violence or hurtful words, but new social media platforms introduced cyberbullying. People can now hide behind screens and say things they were too scared to say before. Social media has given more power to bullies, even when they are not physically around their victim, opening up a new way for bullying to be continued.

Social media has also changed the way people view themselves. On social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and twitter, users are able to see pictures from across the world of other men and women. Due to that, people’s confidence levels have currently changed because they compare their bodies or appearances to those they see on a screen. Social media has made it easier for people to look down on themselves. In the end, it doesn’t matter if you might not have the “sharpest jawline” or the “curviest hips,” it matters what kind of person you truly are. Due to the people one sees on social media and how that helps to shape body image, it has really made people forget that life is not all about looks.

I do agree social media has positive sides to it, but it also has negative sides. People on social media need to end cyberbullying and body shaming. Always remember, what’s put online can be seen forever.
